What is a motorcycle guardian bell or motorcycle gremlin bell?

What are those bells on most Harleys and cruisers?

In the motorcycle community, the gremlin bell is legendary. Bike guardian bells are supposed to ward off evil spirits that prowl the highway. They can be installed in many locations on your motorcycle and come in various patterns.

The bell is thought to entrap ghosts and enrage them with its incessant ringing. After that, they return to the street or pothole in search of their next victim. Hopefully, the rider after them won't be wearing a bell. Although other riders are advised to fend off the evil spirits, the Harley community has a strong tradition of using gremlin bells.

Guardian Bell Rules

  • It should be a gift from a rider and not purchased for yourself for it to work correctly.
  • The lowest point of the frame is where the bell should be fastened. The closest bell to the road monsters is what you desire. You can use a zip tie or the mount with some bells.
  • When you sell your bike, take the guardian bell off of it. Hold onto it or give it in person to the new owner.

The Origin of the Bell

Nobody is aware of the origin of the tale. Some claim these were lucky charms worn by WWII pilots. Another legend goes that in the 1950s, bikers would use them as security to detect attempts to steal their bikes. One thing is sure: the legend is still alive and well. Which one of you would like to invite the road gremlins?
