The HID bulb type known as D3S has undergone modernization in recent years. Since 2009, new D3S bulbs have been safer for the environment because they don't contain mercury and run on a different voltage. To determine which D3S bulb is ideal for your car, we have purchased nine different D3S bulbs from the market and tested them.
These lights are being tested on a 2018 Dodge Durango. Although the findings may differ depending on the vehicle you test your headlights on, they are generally accurate. Using the car positioned 25 feet from the wall, we checked it as usual, turned on the headlights, and then measured the maximum Lux at the brightest point of the beam.
These tests will help you choose the optimum D3S bulbs for your application and needs.
The Lux readings are not relevant outside of this test. They will, however, give you a decent notion of how bright these lights are and how they will appear when you are driving on the open road.
The original OEM D3S bulbs will serve as the standard by which the others are measured. The Durango's original bulbs, the Xerarch 66340 HBI D3S in 4650K, cost $100 a pair online. These are rated at 800 maximum Lux and 1320 maximum Lux at low beams. Although both have good ratings, incandescent bulbs will work better for you when you're driving on the road and have more light than the factory ones.
COMPARISON
The cost of each pair of OSRAM Xerarch 66340 CBI Cool Blue HID Bulbs is $165. Low beam ratings have a maximum Lux of 720, while high beam ratings have a maximum Lux of 1580. With a higher Kelvin rating of up to 6000K, these provide more lumens than the now-standard Philips 4300K bulb. Even though conventional bulbs lose lumens when their Kelvin increases, CBIs are able to provide users with the best of both worlds by combining brighter and whiter light.
It costs $210 for a pair of OSRAM Xerarch 66340 Night Breaker Laser HID Bulbs. With a maximum brightness of 1310 Lux, the low beam is nearly as brilliant as the default high beams. Speaking of high beams, the Night Breaker has a maximum 1610 Lux rating. Without a doubt, these are the most intelligent and superior choices among them.
The most recent technology and some cunning physical adjustments Osram made to the bulbs' focal location have allowed this new bulb to produce 200% more light than the previous model, the XNB, which had 70% more light. They've truly gone above and beyond in terms of low-beam performance!
A pair of Morimoto XB D3S 5500K costs $75. It is nearly as bright as stock at 740 Lux, the low beam maximum. There is a maximum rating of 770 Lux for the high beams. On this list, this choice is the best value.
