9 ways to mount your Motorcycle LED Headlight

For most motorcycle enthusiasts, LED motorbike headlights are an extremely popular improvement. Choose an LED headlight for brighter light, less power consumption, and a modern look.

There is an LED headlamp to fit any bike style that you are designing. Since our very first days, LedLightJeep has been producing LED headlights. This implies that we have installed hundreds of them on nearly every kind of bike that can be imagined.

We had to find creative ways to install LED headlights for various types of motorcycles. These included café racers, bobbers, scramblers, choppers, and trackers.

If you don't share your expertise, what good is it? This post will walk you through the nine different mounting techniques we have discovered for motorcycle LED headlights. What we present here can be duplicated or used as inspiration for new ideas. Whatever bike you ride, you can find the ideal LED lighting solution with simple tools and imagination. 

Let's review the fundamentals of the Purpose Built Moto LED Headlight Range before we start.

Standard sizes for headlights:

7" LED headlight – Ideal for cruisers, more giant café racers, and contemporary street fighters. For practically all brands with retro/classic models, the most frequent manufacturer size for headlights is 7". Our popular Headlight can be easily mounted on many different bikes. It is compatible with various OEM factory headlight mounts.

The 7" Flashpoint Classic has a classic design with a rounded headlight bezel that is CNC carved for a traditional look.

5.75" LED Headlight – I adore this size set up on a sleeker, more contemporary café racer or scrambler. A reduced diameter while maintaining the same light output level enables you to design a more streamlined and understated custom bike. Many cruiser models that adopt the bobber style also look fantastic with the 5.75" size installed. One such model is the Harley Sportster, which looks great with the 5.75" size close to the forks.

5.75" Flashpoint Classic: a more traditional design made possible by a rounded, smooth CNC-machined headlamp bezel. My favorite in the lineup is the 5.75" classic headlight because it is so adaptable.

4.5" LED Headlight– Although it is not a standard or conventional size, I launched this headlamp in 2018 as a bit of an experiment and have found that I use it more and more. They are helpful in many dual headlight scenarios because of their modest diameter. The 4.5" light can be used alone or with a smaller spotlight on a scrambler setup. It is great for those looking for something unique or for creative fabricators.

One last thing that pertains to all headlamp swaps is what I'll say here. A headlight bucket is not necessary for LedLightJeep LED headlights. They are waterproof and designed to function independently. Replacing the headlamp and bucket on many motorcycles only requires unscrewing the old unit, bolting in the new LED unit, and attaching the wiring.

 One problem you can encounter is that cables and plugs are inside when you remove the stock headlight. The two most straightforward solutions to this problem are:

1. Reroute the cables so that they are positioned underneath the gasoline tank, label and unhook any connections, and then reattach the wires. Your work is done once you tie them up nicely. Your headlight section is now tidy. You can do this on almost any bike.
2. If you can't reroute the cables on your bike, the next most straightforward solution is to move the plugs so they sit below the Headlight and cover them with a cable shroud to keep the rain out. You can use a large heat shrink sleeve or buy these from auto stores to achieve the desired effect.

Let us now discuss how to mount these items on your bike. Regarding fabrication, I enjoy putting headlights, especially for our large-scale custom designs. Creating and implementing a straightforward, tidy, and helpful headlamp mount can be an actual work of art for your build and is incredibly satisfying.

You are mounting your LED Headlight with Factory brackets.

As has already been noted, numerous readily replaceable OEM applications for the 7" LED Headlight across a wide range of bike types exist. The Suzuki GN250 or TU250X, the Yamaha XSR700 and XSR900, the Ducati GT1000 Sport Classic, the Triumph Bonneville + Scrambler ranges, and the Yamaha SR400 and SR500 are just a few examples.

Measuring the separation between your headlight mounts is the first step in this process. Compare this to the information in the headlight product description, and if the difference is between 20 and 30 mm, you can typically proceed!

Because OEM mounts are frequently slightly adjustable, this situation usually has a good amount of tolerance. You may even attach a 5.75" LED headlight in place of the OEM 7" headlight on some vehicles, depending on your model and the construction of the mounts. After measuring, if you've decided to use the factory mounting, remove your tools and remove the old headlamp. After it's finished, install the new headlamp using the included bolts and connect it to the bike's current headlight wiring. 

Fork mounted LED Headlight.

I don't use this one very often. There is a plenty of aftermarket brackets available for forks of all diameters. To follow this path, you must measure the distance between your fork's triple clamps and go shopping.

These aftermarket headlight mounts come in a range of prices, from really inexpensive to exquisite CNC billet pieces that require you to sell your bike to afford them. Then again, you won't have a bike so that you won't need the mounts. So you should sell your car. Yes. 

Nevertheless, I frequently buy a fork mount clamp and use half of it to create my own creations. This is an illustration of a recent CX500 construction we completed. 

Making your own fork tube cover can be simple. Just buy a tube that fits, slide it on, and build a bracket if you're good with tools. The only thing to remember with this is to utilize a type of bushing for the tube and make sure it is mounted to prevent rattles on your fork tubes. 

Make sure you have the correct beam angle when installing your LED headlight. Use the techniques mentioned earlier to address any factory wiring problems that may arise. 

Bottom mounted LED Headlight – using mounts off the bottom triple clamp

Three mounting points—two on the sides and one at the bottom—are machined into the bezel of every LED motorcycle headlight in the range. This technique makes use of a single bottom mount, produces an incredibly tidy appearance, and even permits some LED indicators to be housed in the side mount threads. 

Many motorcycles have triple clamps at the bottom that have threads carved into them for mounting different accessories. If you determine that these mounts are strong enough to support your headlamp, installing your Headlight in this manner can be simple, quick, and produce a very tidy finish. 

To mount your LED headlamp where you want, I will use the triple clamp mounts and a few M6 or M8 fabrication slugs to hold them in place. From there, you can bend, cut, and weld a section of round bar or flat plate to the desired location. If you want to use a single bottom mount, it's a good idea to make a stopper to prevent the Headlight from swiveling while it vibrates. Although not required, it's still a good idea to do so. 

This technique was employed in our CX500 signature series build, and the mount is invisible. 

Side-mounted LED headlight – using the bottom triple clamp. 

This installation method connects the sides of the Headlight to a bracket. The bracket is attached to mounting points on the bottom triple clamp. This method is similar to the last one used. making it easier to modify the Headlight's brightness, while it is more difficult to make.

We usually employ a little amount of flat plate, round bar, and a few stainless fabrication slugs as our materials. Use your imagination and reasoning skills on this one. This is an example of a late-model Triumph Bonneville on which we have installed a 7-inch LED Flashpoint.

Select the final mounting option and turn it over. Typically, this design makes use of mount points that were meant for the speedometer and dash cluster.

We will keep the dash in its current position. We will add extra parts such as slugs, longer bolts, and a round bar shape. These additions will connect the top triple clamp to the headlamp on both sides.

Depending on your style, you might employ sharp angles and sweeping bends, but the technique remains the same. After everything is in order, attach the bracket together, weld it, and add any finishing touches you desire. This type of headlamp mount, installed on a Ducati GT1000, is one of my all-time favorites. Using our LED Hollow Tip indicators, the headlamp is mounted from the sides for a straightforward and incredibly clean result. 

Integrated LED headlight + Dash mounts

This project requires a lot of construction. If done correctly, it can effectively address all the issues on the front of the bike. To house the Headlight, turn signals, speedometer, and dash lights, a single bracket assembly should be made. Getting everything just perfect might be challenging, but with the right bike, the benefits are substantial.

I'll remove mounts from the bottom and top triple clamps while doing this. first installing the attachment plates, and then bending the bar design to fit.

'rails' extending behind the Headlight. I'll weld on a few brackets and slugs that extend from the rails to mount the turn signals and Headlight. The plate that the Speedo and dash will attach to is then mounted across the top, between the top clamp and the top of the headlamp.

On the XV750 café racer build that was inspired by manga, this was employed. It held the brackets for all our items and allowed us to attach the headlamp very near the forks on top. 

Twin vertical headlight mounts

I've only used it once on my Honda CB900 chopper project, but this one is for the bobber and chopper fellas. Guys that are willing to think beyond the box love it. Though you could attach the larger sizes, it might get a little too much. The 4.5" LED Headlight size is more appropriate.

I added plates to the top and bottom clamps of the CB900 custom build. I connected them with a circular bar design that went above the clamps on both sides. I liked the notion of the highly elaborate design, but that was the only reason.

By using this design, you can produce a ton of light while maintaining an incredibly tiny front section profile. All I want is an excuse to employ this style once more!

Scrambler LED light plate mount 

The harder it is to fabricate anything, the down on this list we go.

The Scrambler light plate is a good addition for a custom off-road vehicle. However, it requires a lot of effort to make it look nice. I usually use one of two methods when installing an LED motorcycle headlight on a scrambler light plate or grill.

1. The lights are mounted onto the headlight plate, therefore you will need to unplug them if you decide to remove the headlight plate. The sample from the Wide of the Mark adventure film is a Sol Invictus scrambler. I soldered the back of the bezel of the 4.5" LED headlight into the aluminum plate. Making sure the Headlight is not pointing skyward is the tricky part of this. The angle must be correct.

2. Mounting the LED Headlight on the plate independently. As a result, the plate can be removed, but the headlamp remains fixed. When I use this scrambler headlamp approach, I manufacture, cut out, and mount the plate on the front after making a bracket to support the illumination, identical to the one outlined in Number 6. I've discovered that this method is a little simpler and can make it easier to regulate the light. For an example, look at the headlights on a Harley Sportster Scrambler.

Bonus: Here's a strange concept I had for an LED headlight conversion for the XSR900 that has brackets integrated into the headlamp plate.

Front fairing-mounted LED headlight

This one could be very simple or extremely labor-intensive. Simple if your bike has a 7" or 5.75" Headlight fairing straight out of the factory. It is as simple as taking out the old LED unit and installing the new one. Refer to steps 1 or 2. 

Retrofitting a fiberglass fairing kit without any brackets is when things may become complicated. At first, it may seem overwhelming, but if you take it step-by-step, you'll be able to construct something to mount the fairing. I advise you to put the fairing where you want it and then begin adjusting your lamp configuration to accommodate the fairing. I've only ever done this once, and as I write this, I'm going to start working on a bikini fairing for an XS650 once more.
